We have been through quite a journey as GetRentr: we started as a rental app but our path has meandered through myriad unforeseen territories and we are now so much more. We were founded on the core principle that: “Nobody should have to live in unsafe or unsuitable accommodation ever again” and even through our journey has wandered, our mission endures.
When we started three years ago as an idea to connect tenants, landlords and tradesmen in order to improve the rental market for all stakeholders, we had visions of topping the app store and being on phones across the UK. As we began to research the market in depth and build the product, compliance became a key pillar of our offering as we wanted to make it as easy as possible for landlords to stay on the right side of the law. One aspect of compliance that we realised had to be part of this offering was Property Licensing; the dynamic, diverse and difficult set of geographical regulations governing minimum property standards in certain sections of the Private Rented Sector (PRS).
As we started to gather the data, we quickly realised why nobody had fixed this problem: it’s a total minefield. So we spoke to the industry and understood that while there were a number of innovative young companies looking to streamline the property management function, there was nobody looking to solve Property Licensing. Meanwhile, the PRS was rising up the political priority list and enforcement was really beginning to ramp up: there was a genuine desire for an automated user-friendly platform to advise licensing requirements on a property by property basis. So that’s what we built…
Having honed our data gathering and aggregation techniques to crack the problem of Property Licensing, we were looking for our next challenge. What had become clear on our journey so far was that building the product with a slick simple interface was the easy bit. The reason that nobody had been able to build a Property Licensing solution before was the data side: finding, tracking, gathering, cleaning and reconciling disparate messy data was really the problem that we had solved. If we could do it with Property Licensing, why not other data sets based on geographical regulation of UK property?
This confirmed what we already knew: we weren’t a rental app anymore. We had morphed into a company that harnessed data to answer difficult business questions at scale. We were combining multiple datasets to drive unique and powerful insights into the property market for multiple stakeholders. While we were born as GetRentr, we have grown into something else and this name no longer reflected our offering.
So we started looking at translations in every language imaginable for data, intelligence and anything else we could think of but nothing captured our imaginations (and those that did were already taken). We took a step back and thought about what it is that we fundamentally provide to our clients. We realised that the clever technology, the intelligent data manipulation, and the elegant front-ends were all secondary to what clients rely on us for.
Our clients depend on us for the clear and precise results of complex analysis. The algorithms are not important, nobody decides to use our platform by looking at our codebase. Clients decide to use us by looking at the results that we provide, and this is something that we never want to lose sight of. In order to continue and build upon our success, our focus must remain not on methodology, but fixated on the results we give to our clients.
Given that results are fundamentally what we do as a company, we thought, “let’s just call ourselves what we do”. Kamma is a Sanskrit word meaning “Results”. Through our data and insight, we provide answers to our wide range of clients, in detail and at scale. Our products are built to layer clean user-friendly interfaces across the complex machinery of our data gathering and cleansing. Through clever use of technology, we convert disparate, messy data, into precise actionable results, driving business value.
Bye bye GetRentr, you’ve taken us this far. Hello Kamma, taking us into a new era.
Our new name reflects a new era for our company. We started as a rental app but our path has meandered through myriad unforeseen territories, leading us to where we are now: a data centric company providing diverse business solutions via multiple technical channels across an array of markets. Our new name encompasses the variety of our current business activities and future proofs our growth plans.

We started GetRentr with our energy and our focus directed at applications for the private rental sector. However, over time the nature of our business has evolved significantly and we needed a new name and a new identity to reflect this. As we have expanded into new territories and new markets, now is the right time to expand our identity to reflect this expansion and growth.
